This crystal, which has only become widely available over the past decade, can be found as masses of rounded sheaves or as small, flat inter-grown plates, but most often you will see it as microcrystalline stone with a violet-pink color and a surface that glistens as it catches the light. Lepidolite is variety of Mica, colored by Lithium. In industry Mica acts as an insulator; in heating, Lepidolite insulates the heat from hurt. Look for Lepidolite intergrown with crystals of Pink Tourmaline (Rubellite) – which happens quite commonly. Limonite stones are formed in oceanic mud. The surface of the stone is then oxidized through exposure to wind and rain, which produces interesting patterns. Limonite is also known as bog-iron since it is found around lakesides. These strange-looking stones, with their almost organic shape, can command high prices. The most valuable examples have crystals of golden Pyrites showing through the earthy brown layer. These are sold in pairs under the name of Boji Stones.

A secondary mineral of Copper deposits, Malachite is often found alongside Azurite. Single crystals are rare; it more commonly forms nodules or radiating masses. Malachite contains about 60% Copper, so is a useful ore. Large deposits are in Russia, Africa, and Australia. The name derives from the Greek word for the mallow plant “Maloche”, which has leaves of the same soft, deep green. Because of its striking concentric eye patterns, Malachite has long been used as a magical protection against the “Evil Eye”.

Common in mountainous regions, veins of Milky Quartz can be seen threading their way across exposed and eroded rock surfaces. Reflecting light from great distances, this stone has been used to enhance sacred sites for thousands of years. The stones we buy and use today retain this aura of sanctity. Milky Quartz is pure white, either opaque or translucent, and owns its color to tiny bubbles of air or water contained within the Quartz. When other impurities, such as Iron, slightly color the crystal, it is known as Common Quartz. Areas of increased milkiness often occur towards the base of Clear Quartz crystals – again the result of tiny air or water bubbles. This amorphous Tektite is found only in one area of the Czech Republic. Moldavite was created 15 million years ago but its origin is a mystery. It may even have arrived with a comet or meteorite and so be extraterrestrial. Moldavite has always been accorded special significance. Peridot is the gem-quality form of the mineral Olivine. Visitors to the volcanic landscapes often return with rocks encrusted with Peridot. This is, in fact, not a crystal, but wood that has become fossilized over millions of years to make a powerful combination of tree and stone. A recently discovered mineral, Pietersite is an unusual mix of the earthy and the celestial. The stone often looks like a storm in a teacup, a swirl of contrasting colors in turbulent conflict – tot and cold, fire and rain, all mixed up together with a cool, almost metallic luster. Pietersite derives from layers of sand or silt that have become cemented together by Quartz in the form of Blue Falcon’s Eye and Yellow-Gold Tiger’s Eye. This attractive milky-green mineral derives its name from the Dutchman, Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who discovered it in the 18th century. Prehnite is usually seen as radiating masses of botryoidal (like a bunch of grapes) forms, or occasionally as Tabular Crystals associated with Basalts and Feldspars. Originally thought to be a variety of Emerald or Olivine and commonly found in South Africa, it is sometimes known as “Cape Emerald” or “Cape Chrysolite”. Prehnite is notable for allowing the gaze to penetrate a little way into its translucent green interior; making it an ideal stone for relaxing the mind and achieving awareness unbound by our usual experience of time and space.

This stone, some 480 million years old, is a form of Dolerite found only in Preseli Mountain of Pembrokenshire in Wales. Dolerite is a rock composed mainly of calcium Feldspar and Augite with traces of Copper and Pyrite. 5000 years ago, the Neolithic people of Britain moved 19 giant pieces of Bluestone. Each weighing up to 4 tons, from Wales, more than 200 miles, to Salisbury Plain, to build the inner circle at Stonehenge. Legend has it that Merlin the Wizard used his magic to move the Bluestones to Stonehenge through the air. Preseli Bluestone has a powerful aura, giving focus and stability, and anchoring us in the Earth’s energy.

Hardly looking like mineral at all, the soft, silky sheen of Purpurite’s tightly arranged, fibrous crystals makes it easy to identify. It is somewhat rare (principal sources are Rwanda, Namibia, and the US), but its decorative quality has given it a place in the crystal collector’s market, particularly for easing pain and for repairing physical or emotional damage in a sympathetic and gentle manner.
